A True Warm Up for Chicago Real Estate Market?

A Penny for you Thaws

The mercury is slated to ascend today, possibly peaking at 50 degrees. Mush and slush and puddles will result as will multiple smiles and sighs of relief throughout Chicago as weary denizens of the Windy City will hope that this signals the coming end of what has been a fatiguing winter.

The coming end, what a wonderful philosophical lozenge to mull over and contemplate.

Whether it is of winter, America’s current economic duress or the state of things with respect to housing, many of us enjoy a good musing about when certain things will end.

For the apocalyptic few...For some, of course, these musings trend a bit toward the apocalyptic. For these maudlin folks, the end is truly that – the END. These are the select few (I hope it’s only a few) for whom the light at the end of the tunnel is the headlight of an oncoming train.

For my part I prefer to think in slightly less absolute terms. More along the lines of the only lyric I can recall from a song by a band whose name I can never remember – “every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.”

And so it goes, the ongoing swirling cycle of life.

Baseline is this – today the projected temperature in Chicago is 50. After being brutalized by heaps of snow and a preternatural amount of ice since November, a day like this softly strokes our collective sense of possibility. Ah, to luxuriate at least mentally upon leisurely days strolling in shirt sleeves along Chicago’s unparalleled lakefront paths or casually chatting while enjoying a latte at a sidewalk cafe.

And while these things are yet to come, punctuating the horizon of what is yet to come with the coming warming months in Chicago, let us not forget that the sturdy folks who make up the melting pot that is Chicago keep don’t let the cold hold us hostage indoors all season long. Much to the amazement of my international clients and domestic relocation client from points south and west, Chicagoans participate in all of our offerings through the winter.

Whether it’s Michigan Avenue or Lincoln Park’s Armitage, Division Street in the East Village or Rush Street in the Gold Coast, wherever you turn in Chicago there will be a crowd making their way along icy sidewalks to eat, catch a show, enjoy a libation or whatever the case may be.

Truth be told, though, it’s just a bit easier when each footfall isn’t likely to catch a snow drift or ice patch.
