A Real Lesson Learned – Reading the Sports Page in Chicago

Don’t you love learning something new?

One of my favorite things is finding out something I didn’t know. Or maybe that I forgot but was reminded of.

Yep, though I am a not-so-humble Chicago real estate professional by day (and night), learning is one of my passions.

In fact a little secret of The Real Estate Lounge Chicago is my morning routine that includes a profoundly strong pot of coffee composed of beans from metropolis coffee in Edgewater and The New York Times. And what I learned this morning came from the sports page.

It occurred in a two-column write up about a football player who had a street named after him. It wasn’t so much that the player, D’Brickashaw Ferguson, received this accolade but a recounting of the approach taken by his father to shape the demeanor and character of this man.

Buried in the middle of the article was this paragraph:

Their youngest son earned a black belt in karate, played saxophone in the school band and majored in religious studies at Virginia. From the beginning, Edwin Sr. cultivated an analytical approach to problem solving, a four-step process — set goals, form hypothesis, test hypothesis and adjust.

So this is the approach taken by one father with his son. And I mused to myself with a four-year-old and a two-year-old, at what point did D’Brickashaw’s father start to apply an approach that would make Churchill proud? Was he adopting a stern tactical approach before his son started walking? Did he wait until he started school? Did he delineate and stipulate his approach for daily application?

In other words, was his analytical approach kind of like a daily devotional with each part to be checked off as accomplished?

No matter, I like Edwin Sr’s approach. What I like more is the man who his son became (at least in part because of his dad). And though I won’t apply it wholesale myself, I will synthesize some of it and include it in the toolbox that I bring to the table as aĀ  father of two sons in Chicago.

And as my many past and current clients know, I will continue to integrate and apply this analytical approach. To see how it plays out, take a look below to see the exacting process we at The Real Estate Lounge Chicago take to elevate, propel and sell our Chicago real estate listings.
